Overview

The Academic Success Center (ASC), staffed by faculty and advisors, coordinates academic support for students throughout the year. The ASC offers free drop-in tutoring throughout the year for all BFIT students. Everyone on the BFIT faculty and staff offers support toward your academic achievement. Your professors will offer office hours when you can meet with them individually. Also, there are a number of spaces on campus for you to study alone or with your classmates.

The ASC is located in Room 110 in the Union Building, and is open 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 7 a.m.– 4 p.m. on Fridays. Tutoring times for specific subject areas are dependent on faculty and student schedules, and are subject to change.

The ASC has a professional atmosphere and is equipped with WiFi connected computers. Specialized tutoring requests can be made through the Office of Advising. The Assistant Director of Advising is available to meet with students who have additional learning needs and/or want to request accommodations. In addition, the Assistant Director of Advising can help students with academic success skills, such as organization, time management, and test preparation.

Academic Success Tips

Time Management

  • Set goals and make a commitment to achieve these goals. Be sure the goals are clear, concise, and reasonable.
  • Learn to say no! Control the use of your time by being assertive when you are unable to do something.
  • Schedule rest periods into your work time. You will be more efficient in the long run if you are not burnt out.

Note Taking Skills

  • Try to have one binder per class.
  • Read the assigned material before class.
  • Sit as close to the instructor as possible.
  • Draw diagrams or pictures that help you understand.

Study Skills

  • Avoid scheduling a marathon study session.
  • Use gaps of time in your day.
  • Use a regular study area that is not too comfortable (i.e. not your bed).

Test Taking Skills

  • Go to review sessions when they are offered.
  • When your first receive your test, quickly look over the whole test so that you know how to efficiently budget your time.
  • Do the easiest problems first.
  • Always read the whole question carefully. Don’t make assumptions about what the question might be.
  • After receiving a graded test, look it over and make sure that you understand your mistakes
