Geoff Lerner - Assistant Athletic Director & Head Basketball Coach
Coach Lerner is entering his third season as Head Coach of the BFIT Men’s Basketball Team.
He is a 2009 graduate of Ithaca College (Ithaca, NY) in Sports Studies, and received a Master’s Degree in Physical Education from Hofstra University (Hempstead, NY) in 2012.
Lerner began his coaching career at his alma mater, Walt Whitman High School (Huntington Station, NY), where he was an Assistant Boys’ Varsity Basketball Coach from 2010-2012. From 2013-2015 He was the Junior Varsity Boys’ Basketball Coach at Prospect Hill Academy (Cambridge, MA) where he also works as a Physical Education teacher. From 2015-2017 Lerner was the Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at the Wentworth Institute of Technology. During his time at Wentworth he assisted in all areas of the program, including recruiting, scouting, and film breakdown. He coached 4 All Commonwealth Coast Conference performers (2 First-Team selections), as well as the CCC Defensive Player of the Year. Known for their excellent defense, Wentworth ranked 29th in NCAA Division 3 Scoring Defense during the 2016-2017 season.
Lerner was a 3-year varsity player at Walt Whitman High School (Huntington Station, NY) where he was all league, all conference and won a Long Island Class AA Championship reaching the New York State Final Four (2002-03). He went on to play collegiately at Ithaca College (Ithaca, New York).
Dennis Orellana - Assistant Basketball Coach
Dennis Orellana enters his third season as an Assistant Coach on the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology Men's basketball staff in 2019-2020.
Orellana, a native of the Somerville/Cambridge area, attended Prospect Hill Academy and became their first 1000 point scorer and led his high school to two MCSAO Championship games, finally winning his high school’s 1st Championship his senior year. Coach D continued his playing career at Keene State College, perennial powerhouse where he served as Captain in his Junior year. The Owls were regular season champs in 2007 and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament while obtaining the school's best record in history 26-5 in the same year. Coach D graduated in 2010 from Keene State College in Sociology minor in English.
Before Benjamin Franklin Coach D served as a coach in many different facets and levels of the game. He started coaching at his Alma Mater (PHA) as Head Coach of the Middle School Boy's team, then as a Head Assistant Coach on both Girl's and Boy's Varsity Basketball Teams for two seasons. He has also served as an AAU Coach for EVO Hoops for both high school girls and boys, has done 1 on 1 training/player development and has coordinated basketball camps locally.
As Dennis Orellana enters his 3rd season as an Assistant Coach with the Benjamin Franklin Men's basketball program, his primary responsibilities are scouting and recruiting, providing academic support to BFIT players, planning practice and game preparations, on-floor coaching, developing players, and let’s not forget... driving the team van!
In his first season with Benjamin Franklin which was also the first year of the program, Coach D helped lead the Chargers to a 3-23 record and they tied for last place in Region XXI Conference. Coach Lerner & Coach D hit the recruiting road hard, aiding the Chargers in their second year as a program, to a massive improvement: a 9-21 record and 11th place out of 14 teams in Region XXI.
Orellana currently manages & is working towards owning Yew & I Landscaping based out of Jamaica Plain.
