14th Annual Women in Technology Event
Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology Hosts 14th Annual Women in Technology Event to Promote STEM Education for Young Women
Boston, MA—On Wednesday, April 9th, Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology (BFIT) will hold its 14th Annual Women in Technology (WIT) seminar at the college’s historic campus in the South End. More than 100 female high school students are expected to attend the event. WIT provides an opportunity to learn about the value of STEM education by hearing from accomplished women in technical fields and through interactive technology-based workshops and team activities.
Anthony Benoit, BFIT’s 12th President, believes that it is vital to recruit young women into STEM education and graduate them into technical jobs as part of the skilled workforce in MA. “Right here in Massachusetts, in just six years, we are going to be 36,000 associate and bachelor’s degrees short of what we need for the STEM workforce. The annual WIT event is just one of the ways the college is trying to encourage young women to enter technical fields where both opportunity and earning potential are significantly higher.”
This year’s event will feature comments by Lisa Brennan, Market Manager at Grainger, Inc. and the keynote will be delivered by Anna Mracek Dietrich, COO and Co-Founder of the Woburn-based flying-car company, Terrafugia.
Anna Mracek Dietrich, Terrafugia’s Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Co-Founder, received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT and worked in large aerospace before co-founding Terrafugia. Anna has received numerous awards for her work and is active in writing international standards for General Aviation Aircraft, serves on the Board of Directors of Women in Aviation International (WAI), and is a private pilot. Anna was named one of the Boston area’s top 15 Innovators by the Boston Globe, was one of the 10 women selected for the 6th annual Mass High Tech Women to Watch Award, and has been recognized by Engineers Week New England with their Annual Achievement Award. http://www.terrafugia.com/
