Automotive Technology - Many job openings will arise as experienced automotive technicians retire. Opportunities should be good for those who complete postsecondary automotive training programs, as some employers report difficulty finding workers with the right skills. People with good diagnostic and problem-solving abilities, training in electronics and computer skills are expected to have the best opportunities. Those without formal automotive training are likely to fave competition for entry-level jobs.
Building Technology & Design
- Employment of architects (and assistants) is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations between 2008 and 2018. The demand will be knowledge of “green” design, also known as sustainable design, emphasizing the efficient use of resources such as energy and water, waste and pollution reduction, conservation, and environmentally friendly design, specifications, and materials.
Computer Engineering Technology-
Employment is expected to grow much faster than the average, and job prospects should be excellent. Overall employment of computer network, systems, and database administrators is projected to increase by 30 percent from 2008 to 2018, much faster than the average for all occupations. Computer networks are an integral part of business, and demand for these workers will increase as firms continue to invest in new technologies.
Employment of electricians should increase between 2008 and 2018. As the population grows, electricians will be needed to wire new homes, restaurants, schools, and other structures that will be built to accommodate the growing population. In addition, older buildings will require improvements to their electrical systems to meet modern codes and accommodate higher electricity consumption due to the greater use of electronic equipment in houses and workplaces. New technologies also are expected to continue to spur demand for these workers. Robots and other automated manufacturing systems in factories will require the installation and maintenance of more complex wiring systems. In addition, efforts to boost conservation of energy in public buildings and in new construction will boost demand for electricians because electricians are key to installing some of the latest energy savers, such as solar panels and motion sensors for turning on lights.
Electronic Engineering Technology-
Overall employment of engineering technicians is expected to grow between 2008 and 2018. In general, opportunities will be best for individuals with an associate degree or other post-secondary training in engineering technology. Employment of medical equipment repairers is expected to grow 27 percent over the 2008-18 decade, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. As the proportion of people in older age groups will grow faster than the total population between 2008 and 2018, demand for overall healthcare will increase. Increased demand for healthcare services and increasing complexity of the medical equipment used in hospitals and by private practitioners will result in a greater need for repairers. For example, a growing number of hospital diagnostic, Electro-medical, and patient monitoring equipment including CAT scans, electrocardiogram, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, and x-ray machines, as well as hospital furniture, such as full electric beds and wheelchairs, will all need to be maintained and repaired.
Health Information Technology-
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in this field is predicted to grow faster than the average for all occupations with a 20% increase through 2018. The AS and BS programs in Health Information Technology at BFIT will prepare graduates to enter employment as information technicians at agencies, hospitals and practices that provide healthcare or at companies that create, develop, integrate, or maintain health information systems. Health Information Technology (HIT) encompasses the hardware and software as well as the procedures and policies that underlie the storage, retrieval, availability, and security of information to support health care delivery and decision making.
With much faster than average job growth and retirement, heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration technicians and installers should have excellent employment opportunities. Concern for the environment and the need to reduce energy consumption overall has prompted the development of new energy-saving heating and air-conditioning systems. This emphasis on better energy management is expected to lead to the replacement of older systems and the installation of newer, more efficient systems in existing homes and buildings.
Mechanical Engineering Technology-
Mechanical engineering technicians help engineers design, develop, test, and manufacture industrial machinery, consumer products, and other equipment. Opportunities will be best for individuals with an associate degree or other post-secondary training in engineering technology.
Opticianry & Ophthalmic Assisting-
Employment of dispensing opticians is expected to grow through 2018, as the population ages and demand for corrective lenses and fashionable eyeglass frames increases. Job prospects will be best for those who have taken formal Opticianry classes and those who master new technology, including new refraction systems, framing materials, and edging techniques. Ophthalmic medical assistants help ophthalmologists provide eye care. They conduct diagnostic tests, measure and record vision, and test eye muscle function. They also show patients how to insert, remove, and care for contact lenses, and they apply eye dressings. Under the direction of the physician, ophthalmic medical assistants may administer eye medications. They also maintain optical and surgical instruments and may assist the ophthalmologist in surgery. Employment is projected to grow much faster than average, ranking medical assistants among the fastest growing occupations over the 2006-16 decade. Job opportunities should be excellent, particularly for those with formal training or experience, and certification.
