Health Information Technology
Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology is the only college in Massachusetts to offer a Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Technology, or Health IT. Health IT refers to the use of technologies to store, share, and analyze health information to improve patient care. This fast-growing field encompasses a range of positions that involve the development, implementation, and maintenance of computerized health information systems. With the goal of enhancing the quality of patient care and reduce costs, these systems are needed to enable the digitization, storage, and the secure exchange of health information among various clinicians across networks and web services within hospitals and other healthcare settings.
Health IT is one of the fastest growing fields in the healthcare industry with employment in this field is predicted to grow faster than the average for all occupations with a 19% increase through 2022 in Massachusetts. This growth is being fueled in large part by federal regulations which mandate that healthcare organizations such as hospitals adopt and use Health IT in a meaningful way in order to enhance healthcare quality while containing rising costs. These mandates create tremendous growth in hiring demand and earning potential for professionals who can assist healthcare organizations with the planning, developing, implementing, integrating, and managing Health IT systems.
