About the College
Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology (est. 1908) is one of New England's oldest colleges of engineering and industrial technologies, started with a bequest from Benjamin Franklin and a gift from Andrew Carnegie. Our goal is to create a career path by developing a learning environment, through industry partnerships, shared resources, and effective classroom and laboratory practices, which sets the standard for a job-oriented technical education, at both the associate and bachelor degree level. The College attracts a diverse student body, racially, ethnically and economically. Because our student body has unique needs, we offer a "hi-tech, high-touch" approach, caring for each student as a whole, as we create the personalized learning environment which every student needs. Because of our emphasis on student success, we provide comprehensive academic and financial support to our students, leading to a high rate of graduation and gainful employment thereafter.
Dr. Benjamin Franklin believed that “good apprentices would become good citizens.” That vision has guided the College’s pragmatic approach of developing curriculum that meets industry needs, and ensuring student success through comprehensive support. Demand for our graduates is high, not only because they have the skills employers need, but because they learn how to communicate effectively and are valued members of the teams to which they belong. Our curriculum focuses on application, training our students to diagnose and solve problems. As high-skilled technicians, they know how to make things work; as good citizens, they herald civic responsibility in their communities.
Our skills-based curriculum encourages students to think beyond
the classroom through dynamic learning opportunities; with 27
specialized labs, an Academic Success Center, and 800 seat Auditorium,
students learn “hands-on.”
We are the only college in MA that offers Associate degrees in Opticianry and Electrical Technology. Our Bachelor degrees in Health Information Technology and Automotive Technology are also the only ones offered in the state. Our certificates in Alternative Fuel Vehicles (AFV) and Ophthalmic Assisting are also unique in MA. We offer 14 career-path programs. The flagship Automotive Program is the oldest and most successful in the country.
Our students are diverse by every definition: socioeconomically, ethnically, and academically. From different countries, states, and cities, BFIT students are bound by a common desire to obtain a quality technical education that will lead to a job after graduation.
Through student government, seminars, volunteer opportunities, service-learning, civic responsibility and community involvement, our students are civically engaged and responsible. They carry these values with them into the world beyond their college experience.
College-wide academic success initiatives including tutoring, advising, remediation, career counseling and industry partnerships. We strengthen the pipeline into and through college by focusing on access and retention so that every student succeeds. We award over 1 MILLION in scholarships every year.
Founded in 1908, we are the only private, nonprofit, two-year technical college in MA. We are located in the vibrant and historic South End of Boston with its breadth of educational and cultural resources.
Our graduation rate is twice the national average and nearly triple that of MA peer colleges. 90% of our graduates secure employment in their field or go on to continue their education.
