IBM Visits Technical Communication Classes

BOSTON - On November 9, two executives from IBM shared their expert advice with students in the Technical Communication classes.  Ralph Bates, Resources Manager, and Bill Fenter, New England Service Director, stressed the importance of communications skills including team work, as well as oral and written communication, in the workplace. Both Bates and Fenter have years of experience in industry, and were able to speak with authority about what employers like IBM look for in a successful job applicant. “We expect strong technical skills,” said Fenter, “but what else can you bring to the company?” Fenter stressed the importance of community involvement and service as well as academic preparation.

For Ralph Bates, the visit offered a special chance to reminisce.  He and his brothers graduated from BFIT, and he had fond recollections of the excellent preparation he had received here.

A lively mock interview session followed their presentation. Student Mike Daly bravely volunteered to be “interviewed” for a position at IBM and got positive reviews coupled with constructive suggestions from the IBM team. Daly echoed the sentiments of his classmates in expressing the value of the visit to the Tech Communications class. “I always have appreciated this course, but after hearing what IBM had to say, I am excited to keep learning and improving my communication skills. I realize that is what actually will take me far in whatever I have chosen to do in industry.”
