Fast forward to four years ago when Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology (BFIT) was searching for a new program in the optical field and we came upon the word "opticianry." Further reading made it clear that "opticianry' was the name given to a two-year Associate of Science degree program to become an optician. Continued research also revealed that there were no such degree programs in Massachusetts.
Based on our proven formula of partnering with industry before introducing a new program at the college, we contacted the Opticians Association of Massachusetts (OAM) to inquire about their interest in introducing this new program. The OAM representatives were highly enthusiastic about creating a partnership with the namesake college of the inventor of bifocals, Benjamin Franklin.
From the very beginning, the OAM has supported us in every possible way. As you will read in this issue, Blair Wong, Executive Director of the Opticians Association of Massachusetts, became our Department Chair. The courses are taught by him and other opticians who are members of the Association. Internship opportunities are offered to the students during their first and second year and the OAM has donated most of our equipment needs and has also provided scholarships for many of our students. They have also introduced us to many representatives in the optical industry, who have both candidly supported the program with donations, and also offered employment opportunities for our graduates. This partnership is rewarding to all involved, especially the students, and I believe its endurance will hold true.
At Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology, our students are graduating as highly-trained, licensed opticians who are eager to build a career that is both financially and professionally fulfilling. Opticians' duties range from dispensing glasses, to working in a lab, to going into management for an eyeglass or eyewear company. BFIT offers an affordable two-year degree for young students or mid-career changers in a field where there are many job opportunities. Our next program starts in the fall of 2010, and we welcome inquiries about the program or visits to our campus.
Cordially,
Stephen J. Lozen
Interim President
